Corbet, Richard
(1582-1635)
   The son of a gardener, educated at Westminster School and Pembroke College, Oxford, he then took holy orders. He was chaplain to James I and later appointed bishop of Oxford, then of Norwich. He was appointed to the vicarage of Stewkley, Berkshire, in 1620, a position he held till his death. He was strongly opposed to the puritans, and frequently admonished his clergy for puritan practices. He contributed generously to the rebuilding of St. Paul's in 1634, was renowned for his joviality, wit and his love of practical jokes, and was often seen in the company of Ben Jonson. Two notable collections: Certain Elegant Poems, 1647. Poetica Stromata, 1648. Some of his poems: "An Elegy Upon the Death of His Own Father," "An Epitaph on Doctor Donne, Dean of St. Paul's," "Certain True Words Spoken Concerning One Benet Corbett after Her Death," "Fairies Farewell," "Great Tom," "Iter Boreale," "Like to the Thundering Tone," "On Mr. Francis Beaumont (Then Newly Dead)," "The Distracted Puritan," "To His Son, Vincent Corbet" (on his third birthday).
